What is BYSA Wrestling?

BARRE YOUTH SPORTS CURRENTLY OFFERS 3 PROGRAMS FOR ASPIRING WRESTLERS.  NO EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY PROGRAM

6th Grade-8th Grade: Junior High Wrestling

No experience needed.  Practices are 3 times a week.  Monday, Wednesday and Friday 5:30-6:30.  At this level we focus more on technique and progressing your child’s wrestling knowledge of moves and rules to better prepare them for high school.  We play wrestling related contact games to familiarize your child with the physicality of wrestling, expose your child to new moves and techniques and offer competition to those who are ready.  As a lot of children join at this level, we still have a major focus on games, having fun and growing your child’s interest in the sport.  We encourage all athletes to only compete when they feel they are ready and understand the rules and moves of wrestling.  Wrestling shoes are helpful at this level, even at practice, but clean sneakers that are not worn outside are acceptable.  If your child decides they are ready to compete, they will need headgear to do so, we have some available to borrow if needed.  Uniforms are provided for competition.  This level/age group is where children start to love the sport of wrestling and are physically ready to learn moves and compete.  6th graders are invited to practices only, there are no competitions for them, but it is a great opportunity for them to get ready for their normal season that starts in February which they can compete in if they choose to do so.

Starts: Monday after Thanksgiving.  Ends mid-late February after the Junior High State Championships hosted by BYSA & Spaulding High School

4th Grade-6th Grade: Fundamentals of Wrestling

No experience needed.  Practices are twice a week for 60 minutes.  Our goal is to better prepare your child for wrestling by playing wrestling related contact games, teaching more wrestling technique and focusing on growing your child’s love of the sport.  No equipment is needed.  Your child can come with normal active wear and either participate in socs or with shoes that they do not use outside.  This program is a step up from our “Introduction to Wrestling” level.  We focus on your child’s understanding of the rules and moves of wrestling and offer competition to those who are interested (3-4 tournaments).  There is no requirement to compete.  We encourage all athletes to only compete when they feel they are ready and understand the rules and moves of wrestling.  This typically happens in the next level for most children.  Uniforms are provided for competition.  No previous experience is needed.

Starts: mid-late February.  Ends in April.  Dates will be posted on BYSA Wrestling Facebook page, and here, leading up to the season.

Kindergarten-3rd Grade: Introduction to Wrestling

No experience needed.  Practices are twice a week for 45-60 minutes.  Our focus is on getting young children prepared for the physicality of wrestling by playing lots of contact games.  We emphasize working together, having fun, learning the basics of wrestling and growing children’s interest in the sport.  No equipment is needed.  Your child can come with normal active wear and either participate in socks or with shoes that they do not use outside.  This program is devoted to familiarizing children and parents with the sport of wrestling.  There is no competition at this age level.

Starts: mid-late February.  Ends in April.  Dates will be posted on BYSA Wrestling Facebook page, and here, leading up to the season.
